The Berenstain Bears and the Wheelchair Commando

New Cub In town
When Brother and sister hear that there is a new cub in town. They are all hoping thatit will be someone who is good at basketball so that they can beat the pants off of too-tall. When they find out that the new cub is in a wheel chair. They feel so strange around him. Worst of all the new cub is so touchy about his wheelchair.

Will the cubs be able to make friends with the impossible cub?

It is a very good book that teachs kids that all cubs are the same and that it doesn't matter if you can walk or not.

A good level of understanding for children
Brother and Sister Bear's new friend uses a wheelchair and the cubs have many questions for their mother about it. The concerns and questions they have are well explained and the story moves beautifully towards the conflict where the new cub proves himself. The story is well thought out and is very well geared toward children. The story's conflict and resolution are delightful.

Telling time with the Bears
"The Berenstain Bears Catch the Bus" is another winner in the excellent series of children's books coauthored by Stan and Jan Berenstain. The series is about the Bear family: mom, dad, and the two cubs. In this volume, the two cubs oversleep -- will they miss the school bus?

The book contains enjoyable cartoony illustrations that are bright with soft, pastel colors. I especially love the Bear's whimsical house: a hollow tree with Victorian accents and lavender trim. The story is told in an appealing rhyme with simple vocabulary -- great for beginning readers. Example: "It is almost seven, as you can see. / All is quiet in the Bears' Home Sweet Tree."

An nice educational touch to this book is the fact that the Bears' story is accompanied by both traditional clockfaces and digital time displays throughout, thus helping young readers learn how to tell time in both formats. I bought the book for my five year old nephew, and he loved it. Highly recommended.

No more "I want to sleep".
This is a really useful book to get my four-year old out of bed every morning. A nice feature is that every page shows a dial and a digital clock, making it easy for the child to learn to tell time. The book also teaches my son that he might be late for school if he does not wake up on time. So now every morning I will read the book to him, and he will wake up smiling instead of whining "I want to sleep"!

Excellent to jump start a discussion with your child.
My daughter, who is almost 5, loves everyone of these books about the Berenstain Bear family. This one is no exception. I love the way the authors make it so effortless to teach life's lesson while sharing books. I highly recommend them to any parent, whether a first time parent or an experienced one.

The most fun brother and sister around
I can't admit to having read this particular book, but if it's anything like all the many other Berenstain Bears books I've read, then this would surely be a favorite, too!

Bertie and the Bear
Published in Paperback by Berkley Pub Group (March, 1984)
Author: Pamela Allen

love Pamela Allen books
My 3yo daughter loves the Pamela Allen books and this one is typical of the ones that appeal to younger readers with great illustrations, a rollicking pace and lots of funny sound effects. They sometimes read this book on one of the popular kids TV shows here in Australia so it is quite widely known here.

Learn all about Sounds!
The bear is running after Bertie and the rest of the people in the castle are trying to scare the bear away by making a lot of noise!

The Admiral with his gong, the Captain with a horn, the General with a flute and many others teach children the different kinds of sounds that are produced with different sources.

Great illustrations accompany the story and the story ends funnily and happily.

Wonderful book for kids and educators.

Big Bears Can!

Who is Big Bear?
Okay, so I'm the author reviewing my own book. I know. Let's say I'm giving the ILLUSTRATIONS five stars. And I just wanted to say that the debate about Big Bear is raging from Europe to the US. Is Big Bear Little Bear's big brother - in which case the small dude's taunting is regrettable indeed! - or is he Little Bear's long suffering DAD, a character so lovingly responsive to taunts from junior? This second was my intention. The dad from Texas thought so as well, but not the Library reviewer. Maybe you'll decide for yourself. If you do, let me know.

...or how to get dad in a tight spot
Baby bear is left with dad and he entices and encourages his dad to do more and more....a delightful story that highlights the wonderful ability children have to sucker us in to their way of thinking.

The Big Blue House Call

What Children's Books Should Be
Too often these days children's books and tv shows are simply aimed at keeping a child's eyes glued to a colorful page or to a screen, without much thought to imaginative stories or to helping a child to learn or adapt. Not so with this opus. The subtle, fun, and funny narrative cannot but succeed in infusing in the child reader the importance of going to the doctor and of conquering his or her fears of health care. Although Kiki Thorpe and Tom Brannon do a great job in bringing this into book form, it should be noted that this book is adapted from a "Bear" episode written by the talented Chris Moore, whom Thomas Bonfiglio once called, "The best children's writer since A.A. Milne." I only wish more of his work was available.

Everything Your Child Wants to Know About the Doctor
This book is an excellent choice for explaining your child's visit to the dotor. It covers everything from eye charts to vaccinations. Bear rids Ojo of fear of shots in a simple way that works for your own little ones. The other characters are enthusiastic about their check-ups, which I believe is a great example and very influential to our children. If I could share one book before a doctor's visit with any child, this would be it. Light hearted yet full of information kids can relate to, this is one of the best "Bear" book yet!

The Big Brag (Little Dipper Book)
Published in Library Binding by Random Library (November, 1998)
Authors: Seuss and Dr Seuss
Average review score:

My favorite Seuss
One of the most entertaining Seuss Stories I have ever read, makes me glad I have kids or I may have missed this Gem. Story was so good I bought a copy for the day care center.

The Big Brag is NOT a Big Drag
The Big Brag is a delightful book for parents to read to their kids. When Seuss preaches and teaches to eaches of us, we smile all the while. And his warnings about self-blow-your-own- hornings message comes through loud and clear. If preachers could teach when they preach like Seuss on the loose, our churches would be packed every Saturday or Sunday.

Bongo Larry

Authors: Daniel Manus Pinkwater and Jill Pinkwater
Average review score:

Yeah!
Daniel Pinkwater rocks! This is a great example of his humor -- bears drinking blueberry juice and doing beat poetry in coffeehouses. Yeah!

This book is the most, to say the least.
The beat generation has not gone gray. They have gone white, polar white, bear white. They are living in the Hotel Larry wearing shades and eating blueberry muffins. How cool can a book be...

Boswell Wide Awake
Published in Hardcover by Farrar Straus & Giroux (October, 1999)
Author: Alexandra Day
Average review score:

A wonderful wordless picturebook.
Ages 2-6 will find here a gentle story of a young bear wakened by a full moon, who discovers things alive in the night. The wordless picture book provides dark yet engaging illustrations as it follows Boswell's patrol of the premises.

Baby bear Boswell "shuts down" the house for the night
This is another clever book and character. You can sit down with your child and use his or her imagination. Boswell, a very endearing little bear, goes about the home inside and outside taking care of things left undone. Every parent would love to have a child like Boswell. He even gives each of his parents a kiss goodnight as they lay asleep--a role reversal that is very effective with this story. If you like Carl you'll like Boswell.
